Background

In Lebanon, civil society organizations (CSOs) are at the forefront of tackling social, economic, and political challenges—from youth employment and gender equity to environmental preservation and governance. While these organizations possess deep contextual knowledge and passion, many lack the practical research skills needed to systematically study the issues they champion. Without reliable data and evidence, even the most pressing concerns can go unnoticed by policymakers.

The Challenge

CSOs in Lebanon often found themselves struggling to produce the kinds of rigorous, data-driven insights that resonate with decision-makers. Limited funding, lack of research experience, and an absence of structured mentorship left these organizations reliant on anecdotal evidence to make their case for policy change.

Our Approach

To bridge this gap, ThinkTriangle designed a comprehensive capacity-building program aimed at helping dozens of Lebanese CSOs realize their research potential:

  • Topic Identification & Research Scoping: Guided organizations through selecting focused, impactful research questions aligned with their advocacy goals.
  • Mixed Methods Research Training: Introduced participants to both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques, ensuring a holistic view of complex social issues.
  • Systematic Literature Reviews: Demonstrated how to locate, evaluate, and synthesize existing scholarship, equipping CSOs with the foundational knowledge to build on past work.
  • Data Collection & Analysis Tools: Taught participants how to design surveys, conduct interviews, and analyze results effectively using user-friendly platforms and methodologies.
  • Results Utilization for Advocacy: Emphasized translating research findings into compelling policy briefs, infographics, and other advocacy materials to engage key stakeholders.

Results and Impact

The project proved transformative for participating CSOs:

  • Enhanced Research Competencies: Organizations gained newfound confidence in scoping, conducting, and analyzing research—ensuring their work is robust and credible.
  • Evidence-Based Advocacy: Armed with solid data, CSOs can more effectively lobby policymakers and stakeholders, creating a clear path to sustainable, policy-driven change in Lebanon.
  • Collaborative Learning Community: By bringing together multiple CSOs, the program fostered a supportive network where participants continue to share tools, resources, and best practices even after formal trainings concluded.

Looking Ahead

With strengthened research capabilities, Lebanese CSOs are now better positioned to tackle the country’s emerging challenges through evidence-informed strategies. Triangle continues to provide guidance and support, helping CSOs refine their methods, amplify their policy influence, and ultimately contribute to a more resilient civil society sector in Lebanon.
